Launching environmental solutions for small communities
Municipal Enterprise Lutskvodokanal, with the support of UNICEF, is launching one of its most important projects aimed at addressing the challenges of small and remote communities and creating safe, high-quality living conditions for their residents.
The project begins with educational institutions within our territorial community. As part of this initiative, modern European-standard local wastewater treatment facilities are being installed. These systems can solve the problem of lacking centralized sewage in schools, villages, settlements, and remote areas.
These are pilot projects both for our community and for Ukraine as a whole. We are confident in their successful implementation and see great potential to scale these solutions nationwide.
We have already begun this process and want to show that the problems of small communities can be addressed quickly, effectively, and in an environmentally responsible way. People live there, and every person has the right to basic sanitation and safe drinking water.
Why is this important? In most villages, there is no sewage system, and all wastewater flows directly into the local ecosystem and soil, right next to the wells people use for drinking water. Within just 5-10 years, polluted water with high levels of organic matter and decomposition products seeps into the groundwater, which these same residents rely on daily. This directly impacts their health.
While this problem is not pressing for the city, since we have centralized treatment facilities and are constantly upgrading them, it is critical for rural areas.
We must find solutions that are economically affordable, environmentally safe, and technically effective. Our mission is to create comfortable living conditions for residents of even the smallest settlements and ensure safe drinking water for future generations.
