Working group meeting held to implement the Zero Waste Certified City program in Lutsk City Territorial Community
Following the signing of the Waste Management System Standards Certification Agreement in 2024, developed for European municipalities based on the concept of zero waste as defined by the International Zero Waste Alliance and the European Zero Waste Alliance, Lutsk City Territorial Community is actively exploring ways to implement these standards. Yurii Bezpiatko, Secretary of Lutsk City Council, convened a meeting of the working group dedicated to the implementation of the Zero Waste Certified City program.
According to Oksana Lysak, the Head of the Ecology Department of Lutsk City Council, the Council aims to develop and enhance the waste management system, develop a Zero Waste Plan, implement measures to reduce waste volumes, increase recycling efficiency, and establish a closed-loop resource management system.
Our community will be supported by local, European and international Zero Waste organizations. Compliance with the defined criteria will be audited every three years.
The ultimate goal of the program is to reduce the amount of waste sent to solid waste landfills for disposal. Specifically, the target is to decrease the per capita volume of landfilled waste to 120 kg per year, down from the current estimate of approximately 300–400 kg. Achieving this goal will also enhance recycling efficiency and eliminate the need for waste incineration.
To reach this objective, it is essential to separate waste, promote recycling, encourage the reuse of goods, create new products from waste materials, implement composting practices, engage the public and businesses in the transition to zero-waste production and consumption, and inform every community resident about waste management processes.
Participation in the program is expected to yield additional benefits, including improved environmental quality and, consequently, a better quality of life for residents. It will also foster the development of new industries, create job opportunities, attract investors, and enhance the international image of Lutsk as a city committed to environmental responsibility.
