Deputy Mayor Iryna Chebeliuk participates in international conference “Interfaith relations in Ukraine: history and the present”

The international conference “Interfaith relations in Ukraine: history and the present” was held in the exhibition space of Okolnyi Castle. The event took place as part of the celebrations marking the 650th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Lutsk.

The conference brought together Deputy Mayor of Lutsk Iryna Chebeliuk, Deputy Head of the Volyn Regional Council Hryhorii Pustovit, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Lutsk Anna Nowakowska, as well as members of the clergy and academic community.

The program focused on the historical development of the Catholic Church in Volyn and the west of Ukraine from the 13th to the 20th centuries, the Church’s role in Ukrainian-Polish historical reconciliation, and the current state of interfaith relations in Ukraine.

In her welcoming remarks, Deputy Mayor Iryna Chebeliuk noted that this event is a valuable opportunity to discuss important aspects of the history of Lutsk, Volyn, and Ukraine as a whole.

“Our city has always been home to representatives of different nationalities and faiths. Historically, its proximity to Poland led to many shared chapters in our histories. It is essential that the study of historical events takes place openly, fairly, and without bias. We are already seeing evidence that one of our neighbors — who not only seeks to occupy Ukraine but also rewrites history in its own favor — is actively replacing factual truth. That’s why the work of historians who preserve authentic memory for future generations is so important. I thank everyone who uncovers and publicly shares historical facts, it truly matters.”
